FHS Summer Reading GoalRead as much as you can when you can!
All students are expected to read over the summer and be able to discuss what they read in class in a small group setting. As always, we will continue to offer students choice, so they may select any book from the grade-appropriate options below. Or, beginning with this summer, students may choose to read a series of articles focused on a particular topic, instead of a book. Students taking AP Language and Composition or AP Literature and Composition will complete the summer work for that course only, though they may read more for their own pleasure. Grading
Summer Reading counts as one holistic Habits of Mind grade.
Grade Level Teams collaborate to decide on approaches to how students can show that they read their book in addition to the book talk. We are also grading the students’ participation in a book talk. The book talk can be done in a variety of ways. The goal is to get students talking about what they read in small or large groups. Some students might feel more comfortable developing a visual with answers to questions than participating in a group discussion. Teachers have the autonomy to design an appropriate task for individual students as needed.
Extra Credit Opportunity:
Students may wish to challenge themselves even further by completing a written response on additional book for an extra credit. The score will be entered as a reading category test grade for Quarter 1.
Keep in Mind:
All students should consider the reading level and subject matter before selecting a book and discuss their choices with their parent/guardian. Some books on the recommended list contain mature content. Parents should consider their child’s reading tastes and maturity. Parents/Guardians may wish to read their child’s book choice.
